The last race of the European season! The last opportunity to qualify for the Grand Finals in Bahrain!
We arrived in Genk to damp weather and had a solid test on the Friday on a predominantly dry track showing good pace. That all changed for Saturday though as the heavens opened and a canoe would have been a more appropriate form of transport!
Pace remained solid, although it has been some time since weāve driven in such treacherous conditions! We were P11 and P12 in the final two practices, so more work to be done. Saturday ended with quali, and with the best 2 laps to count I pushed hard and was happy enough with a 7th and 6th for the heats.
We woke Sunday to similar conditions to Friday. I played it a little too safe in the heats, and finished a respectable 6th in each, but knew Iād need to go better to win the ticket I was racing for - this set me up for a P6 start in the final.
The start in the final was not great, with the outside being shuffled back and I emerged from turn 2 in 7th. Seb Bearman, also in the ticket race was in P3. Work to be done! I progressed forwards, making my way to the head of the second pack and into P3 with a train of karts behind. The front 2 had checked out and were some 3 seconds up the road, so no chance of tow. I built a small gap to Bearman, held my nerve, and banged in multiple consistent laps giving me a 2 kart lead heading into the last lap. No defense, pushing forwards, I crossed the line in P3 and won my ticket!
Last minute possibly, but Bahrain here we come!!
Massive thanks to the team for doing a mega job as always, especially @mikevanvugt1 on camera and data, and KR Engines, @connorhambleton43 for the waft! šš
